I want to live in a loft, alone. I've been looking in dwntn LA and all there are are these newly refurbished bldgs w/ these TINY, dark spaces that are just as big, perhaps smaller, than the studio I live in now, but 2.5 times the price.
These aren't lofts, they are expensive studios in a posh bldg. I think loft, I think SPACE, a bit wherehouse-y, and minimal living. I'm willing to spend up to dbl of what I pay now, but I want space.
Are there any more real lofts in downtown LA? or have the corporate mongers completely taken over?

Re: Downtown "Lofts" are a scam
Mon, January 23, 2006 - 6:54 PMJust like the lofts back in SF, LA shouldn't be any different. Cheap materials, snap-on components, viola--McLofts.
After looking all around Silverlake for something different from my warehouse back in SF, I looked at a few lofts downtown. I found one in an old warehouse and it's rough, rustic, do-it-yourself-powertool, positioned on the corner of Crack & 8-Ball. It's also 1/3 the price of the McLoft I looked at down the street.
So, yeah, you do have to look around and you do have to make a lot of trips around the downtown area, but trolling CL and tribe helped.
Realistically, you'll probably have to live in a shared space for some time, waiting for a loft in your building to open up that you can occupy. That's what I'm doing now. I've been here two months and the space next door will be vacated May/June. Then I get the whole space to myself. Or myself and my girlfriend if she ever moves down. Or maybe I'll just leave it open and, yeah, just leave it open. That would look nice. -

Re: Downtown "Lofts" are a scam
Tue, January 24, 2006 - 9:33 PMYep. Get to know the building managers--my advice. The first place didn't work out, but I spoke with the building manager and he pointed me to another building in the same neighborhood that had a space with common areas being shared. I met those people, then the building manager who said I could get the next available spot, which was could be a single-person dwelling.

Tue, January 24, 2006 - 9:38 PMHa! Sorry Paynie. You know most of this already. I forgot whom I was replying to.
Yes. CL got me to meet the right people, the building manager got me to the right place.
